In the North of England there are many places to visit, one place in particular is the Peak District located in Derbyshire, it’s surrounding areas comprise of Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, Cheshire and West Yorkshire. With all of these great areas nearby there is plenty for you to get involved in. Another place to make sure you visit is the National Park which was founded in 1951.

The National Park was the first in the British Isles in 1951, the park covers 555 square miles and in 2010 was named the 5th Largest National Park in England and Wales.

One very famous place which is the perfect family day out when staying in the Peak District is Alton Towers. If you want to liven up your stay then you can go there for the thrilling rides and get your adrenaline going. You can get a 1 day pass for £30 or a 2 day pass for £40. Bars and restaurants are at the park so you can spend the entire day there.

Air sports are very popular in the Peak District because of the views that you get from being so high up. You do not need to be an expert in any, as there are tasters day which are great fun. The sports vary from Paragliding, Hang gliding and Paramotoring, Derbyshire Flying Centre provide all the training and a great experience.

A great pastime in England is Golf, Matlock Golf Club has 18 holes covering 5,800 yards and is situated 850 feet above sea level with the mind-blowing views from the Peak District. As if these views are not enough, you can also see the valley of the River Derwent.  The Club has recently had a refurbishment with all new lawns, equipment, machinery and a more modern feel. If you just want to practice then you can have a pre-match putting and this is a 3 hole green which is right next to the 1st tee. If you fancy going to Matlock Golf Club then it will cost you £30 per round or £35 for the day midweek and £35 at the weekend but restricted tees. A clubhouse is available at the course which offers coffees in the day or a formal dinner in the evening.  You can also hold a conference there in the committee room which holds around 100 people.

If you want to see the real Peak District then visit Speedwell Cavern which gives you an opportunity to feel the atmosphere underground. In order to see everything you will travel through the200 year old lead mine by boat. The boat stops 200 metres below the hill and you get to see a magnificent Bottomless Pit – words cannot describe the impact that it has on you. If you consider visiting Speedwell Cavern and Peak Cavern then it will cost you £13 for an adult, £9.50 for children 5-15, Concessions £11.25 and there are discounts for schools or group visits.

One of the most popular theme parks in the UK is Alton Towers and it is located in the Peak District. It is not just a theme park; it is an adventure just being there. If you’re not an adrenalin addict then there is plenty for you to do here.  You can do everything, or just choose what is better for you. Here are the attractions available to you.

The magnificent theme park where all of the fun begins! If you are a real darer then why not try the Thriller Rides this will definitely get your heart racing. Among these there are: New for 2010 Thirteen which will take you through the dark forest to find unexpected creatures, Nemesis which gives you an unbelievable amount of G-Force, Rita for those definitely not scared achieving 0-100km in 2.5 seconds and these are just a few to get you started. Now for the more light-hearted rides that do not make you scream to death but you can enjoy them with the family. Why not have a trip down the Flume, Sonic Spin ball, Twirling Toadstool, A Runaway Train, A very enjoyable Sky ride to see the entire park, Haunted Hollow and many more.  Finally not forgetting the little ones which also have a busy day ahead of them, for the younger ones they can experience a ride like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wobble world, Doodle Doo Derby, Sea life reef, Peugeot Driving School and various other quests throughout the day. A day pass for the Theme park is £38.00.

If you are not interested in rides but a Water Park is more your fascination then there is a Water Park here as well, which is full of Slides, Water Features, Facilities, Bars and Restaurants. The theme of the park is in the style of the Caribbean which is also heated. You can let the kids go on all the slides and you can relax by the lovely lagoon in the peace and quiet. Have a spot of lunch after in Quenchers the restaurant where you can have a sandwich, a beer, an ice cream all just in front of the water. You will feel like you have escaped to the Caribbean. Water Park is £14.

There is lots of entertainment, evening shows and celebrations all through the year.

You can make it an experience you won’t forget by making a weekend of it and staying in the Hotels available at Alton Towers. There are 2 you can choose from The Alton Towers Hotel and Splash Landings Hotel. At the Alton Towers hotel it has a quirky theme with different surroundings; the Splash Landing hotel is in the Caribbean style like the Water Park. In both hotels you can choose themed rooms for the children varying from Pirates, Chocolate room, Peter Rabbit, Sleep over, Seaside to make it more special. Both have bars and restaurants to choose from. If you choose to have a stay at Alton Towers you can get a 2 day pass instead of one so you can see both the Theme Park and the Water Park.  A stay at The Alton Towers Hotel costs £104.50 for a twin/double room including bed and breakfast.
